Mweka Cave

The Chagga bolt hole, this is one of the holes dug in 18th century by the Chagga tribe as the place of refugee during inter-tribal wars mainly (Chagga and Maasai). The Chagga dug system of underground tunnels and caves stretching far miles, where they could take cover with their families and even livestocks during the inter-tribal war. The tunnels had entrance, livestock chamber, kitchen chamber, resting room, air vents, chimney outlet for smoke and passage to the river. Some of these caves can be seen even today in different areas in Chagga land in Kilimanjaro as the historical land mark.
